Among Us

Among Us is an online multiplayer game where you join other crewmates in teamwork or betrayal! Once my teenagers began playing this game, they begged me to join them. I have to admit the little characters (and their many hats) are pretty cute and I was inspired to make some teen-pleasing macarons! I enjoyed planning out the template and process for this project. But unfortunatly I lapsed into some bad macaron behaviors from lessons I learned a while back, which led to frustrations in both myself and the end results. (grrrrr) Pretty sus behavior but I was able to salvage the mission and no one was ejected into space. (hahaha)

Notes from the Kitchen

I found a little image of a character and pasted it into a document. I then copied it, reversing to face the other way so that I would have fronts and backs of macarons. I printed 4 pages of my little guys, which fit perfectly in half-sheet trays.

I then placed silicone mats over the templates so I could still see them when piping. I’m sure it would have been fine to leave as-is, but I slipped the paper out before baking.

I pulled out a variety of colors and tried my best to match to the little characters. There are 12 unique character colors, but I only made 8. That is plenty to separate, mix and pipe!

Fluffy meringue! I think this is my favorite part of making macarons. Watching in wonder and delight as the slimy egg whites are transformed into pillowy sugar peaks!

I made two separate batches of macarons, each divided into fourths and colored, for a total of 8 colors. I did a batch at a time to avoid any batter sitting too long before piping.

I made two fronts and two backs for each color, so I could choose the ‘best’ of each to assemble for the final collection.

Oh the carnage! After I piped each color, I tossed the bag on to the heap and took the same piping tip so I had absolute uniformity. Heaps!

After they baked, I picked my favorite front and back for each character. I used my edible food marker to draw on the character outline and piped on some vanilla buttercream both as filling and for the mask.
